I only had two classes this week (the other two start next week), but my week started with a 6 hour lecture on Monday for Wellbeing and Prevention in Health. The majority of the lecture was administered by my Public Health Policy professor, Dr Evelyne de Leeuw - a burly Dutch woman with a strong, deep voice and an odd, but amusing, enthusiasm for PH Policy. She was interesting to listen to, and I sat furiously ticking away notes on my laptop while she went through the last 400 or so years of Public Health History, the evolution of Public Health Policy, etc.
A few take-aways from Dr de Leeuw:
"Work on rage toward stupid politicians."
"Prevent(ta)tive health is stupid.
Say no to preventing health.
Say yes to promoting health."
“Don’t do the bad things; do the good things!”
"The more socially connected you are, the less mucus you produce."
"Play with your data."
"Go celebrate your public health-ness
by getting your picture taken with the bronze Broad Street Pump statue in
London."
"Start thinking like a Swapper!"
I think I'm going to enjoy her class.
